Can you counter this argument about religion?

Totally not my argument, but let me quote what they are saying and if you can have something to say to this?

';And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves...

To those who may say: But we don't take the bible literally when it comes to things like this!.... I say Instead you cherry pick the ';Nice'; passages in the bible. Seems to me all your doing is editing an ancient work of fiction to make it more suitable for the its incompatibilities with today's modern society and ethical views.

one uses real physical evidence to back its claims and brings us medicine, food, technology, and helps insure our continued survival against a universe which is constantly trying to kill us. While the other presents zero physical evidence and causes war, death, (Extremist countries probably have nuclear weapons by now and would love to ... See Moreblow away all of us Heretics) Religion slows the progress of science that can save lives such as stem cell research because ';God'; forbids it. I don't think religion deserves any respect, it does nothing but harm, we are getting absolutely nothing positive out of religion at this point, humans would be far better off if it just went away completely. We have no need for it, we certainly don't need it for ethics because after all there is inherent good in all of us right?

Why the hypocritical double standard that religion gets, I don't understand it. I see so many religious people rant and rave about how atheists are not tolerant of believers and have no respect for their faith etc. To non believers this is absurd. Because intolerance of various religions is one of the foundation of Judaism, Christianity, Muslims ... See Moreetc. The Bible commands religious intolerance in MANY verses, even to the point of KILLING people for their beliefs! Sure these people may not take these verses literally and choose to ignore the nasty parts of their faith but the fact of the matter is that this is the type of thing religious beliefs teach. The Christian religion is to blame for one of the biggest mass murders in history, the Inquisition. Mass genocide is being carried out to this day because one group of people believe in a different floating all knowing magical god than another so they slaughter each other because that's what their faith teaches, Christians are included in these crimes. Believing in this harmful nonsense certainly doesn't have my respect. Like I said before, we would all be much better off if religion would just go away completely, we have zero need for it in a modern society, with our own ethics and punishment systems for things that are damaging our society etc...

The reason I keep posting this kind of stuff is not to get in arguments or piss people off (My family included), its because if we just ignore the harm that religion is doing to the human race all will be lost, extremist countries will one day have enough nuclear bombs to destroy the earth as we know it, and we are just as much to blame. It would ... See Morebe nice if the world could just tolerate everyone's beliefs and let everyone mind their own business but the fact is that religion is invasive by nature, its whole purpose is to convert people to follow it blindly, children are constantly brainwashed when they are forced to attend church and forced this nonsense when they don't know any better and this leads to dangerous cycle of parents doing the same thing to their kids and so on, JUST like sexual %26amp; physical abuse has proven to do to children, and this all has the potential for consequences such as making people commit mass murder, nuclear war, brainwashing, martyrdom etc all in the name of their faith.... it could very well be the end of us if we let it. That's why I pipe up on my soapbox and try and get a few people to use an open mind and do their own research, alot of people where taught this stuff when they where too young to make up their own minds, I encourage everyone.... don't believe anything until you have researched the facts for yourself. Study, Study, Study, Study. Then make an informed decision based on the facts that we have been presented with. Don't base your choice or base your entire life on fear of going to an imaginary hell. You don't need GOD to be a good person! So why do we need god at all?...';

Because I'm totally out of words.Can you counter this argument about religion?
First, I don't have any problem reading the above verses literally. God doesn't owe us anything, we sinned against Him. If we hadn't had done so, there wouldn't have been any death. So this part is merely a straw man.

';Extremist countries probably have nuclear weapons by now and would love to ... blow away all of us Heretics';

And who created those nuclear weapons? Could it be the side that ';uses real physical evidence to back its claims and brings us medicine, food, technology, and helps insure our continued survival against a universe which is constantly trying to kill us';?

';Religion slows the progress of science that can save lives such as stem cell research because 'God' forbids it.';

Besides the technicality that many theists weren't against stem cell research but embryonic stem cell research, it turns out that embryonic stem cell research might turn out not all that necessary after all. And there weren't any guarantees that it would have lived up to the high hopes people had for it anyway.

';Christians are included in these crimes';

If they weren't following what Jesus commanded His followers to do, then they weren't Christians regardless of what they called themselves.

';its whole purpose is to convert people to follow it blindly';

Wrong. If anything, I think Christian preaching has become too watered down.

';it could very well be the end of us if we let it.';

Slippery slope.

';Then make an informed decision based on the facts that we have been presented with.';

Good advice. That's exactly why I'm a Christian.

';You don't need GOD to be a good person!';

Morality and materialistic atheism, however, are logically inconsistent.Can you counter this argument about religion?
sigh, wall of txt makes my eyes burn
TOOOOOO LONG

copy and paste may be easy for you but we have to read it
You should use the exact Book, Chapter and verse when you quote the Holy Bible... Blessings !
You make it sound as if I would do those things because I believe in Jesus Christ. I believe in Him and have no desire to conquer, pillage and rape the world.

It seems like you have a lot of questions. I hope you will find what you are looking for.
Could you repost it and paraphrase ( and for the love of puppies, downsize) it and then just link the source. Reading walls of text while tired makes my eyes bleed.
i shall answer properly...i just type slowly..

i will be back..

IN EDITING:

EDIT:

The effect that is generated here, is that you highlight the fact that there are bad things in the texts, yet you fail to give proper context to those sightings that you list.(i do realize that its not yours directly, but you are still mentioning these verses)

Context does not mean that you also read the parts around those text to see what was going on, but also checking to see good reason and directive when these things are said.

people have a tendancy to think that they have the moral laws down pat, and that they themselves are moraly sound, but the problem is, is that for every action we do that we consider as ';bad';, someone else has romaticized, and made good according to them.

no one mentions that what they are doing is evil or wrong, they say their reasons for why they are doing it. Hitler was trying to perfect the human race, and make himself the king. in his own way, he was trying to unify the world in the way he would like to see it done.

in that context, it seems good does it not? unity for the world, advancment of the human race, end to all wars..

So when we sight the ';bad'; verses in the bible, we decide that the decisions god made were bad. but we have no real way of knowing that they are bad. we may simply just disagree with what he said.

showing the christians ';cherry picking'; good verses to follow is very true, but to find the ';bad'; ones, you too must do the same thing.

the whole thing boils down to this.

children always think that their parents are being mean and cruel when they are not getting their own way.

when the parents punish their children, the children then say how mean their parents are. We just are not capable of understanding of why god thinks that was a good idea when he said that.

now, i know what must be asked here, that god is said to be unchanging, and that he said he is jelous, and he changed his mind on multiple occasions. But what is meant by that?

God did not change, he simply knew that we have changed, and changed the rules for us. Just like extending the bed time for a child when he gets a little older.
You're right, we don't need a god at all. I'm with you.

If you could just pare it down a little :)
you quoted the Holy Bible.

it was an actual incident that the hebrews recorded for our generations to read.

it is obvious from yr words that ...

-- you do not know God

-- you do not know His Word; neither are you given to understand it

you're part of a huge multitude of the godless bound for hellfire.

religion does not cause wars.

this is an evil and unjust world.

God will take revenge and bring justice thru wars as well as using other methods ... natural disasters.

it is folks like you who do not understand the equation, who keep committing the same mistakes generation after generation ... then blame it all on religion ... never NEVER on your own failings as a human, as a parent, as a people.

' You don't need GOD .....'

these are the most foolish words one can make.

you're alive bc of God

the whole universe functions and spins bc of God.

take away the God equation = hell

you have many things to learn.
